Strategic Plans

Strategic plans can be powerful tools to focus the efforts of an organization on achieving its long term purpose and potential. Strategic planning processes should enable participants to rise above the demands of operating the organization and apply creative thinking to achieving long term success.

John Mero’s research confirms that successful strategic plans offer clarity of vision, strength of judgement in strategy selection, are easy to understand by those who will implement them, and provide clear performance outcomes. Strategic planning processes should involve those affected as much as practical and when well-facilitated, the planning process will predispose participants to welcome new possibilities.

The content of a strategic plan will vary according to circumstances.  Typically the content will include:

  • Clarity of purpose and the values that define the organization
  • Strategic implications in the environment
  • The organization’s preparedness to succeed including SWOT and SREM analysis
  • The macro decisions needed to position the organization for success
  • Performance indicators and measurement
  • Implementation
  • Monitoring and corrective action
