Board Teamwork

Successful boards work as a team. To be effective team members, directors must have the ability to work in a collective effort to implement the duties, powers and functions of the board. Board teamwork is not just about group synergy, it also incorporates being an effective governance unit, able to address the best interests of the organization. As boards work in a legal context, director teamwork includes shared risk and mutual obligation, therefore the performance of each director is vital to everyone’s interests. Many aspects of board teamwork are simple.  For example, if directors are going in different directions they will go nowhere together. Other issues directors face are more complex, such as overcoming differences and managing personalities whilst remaining a viable decision-making unit able to look after the interests of the organization.
